Predation on migrating eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) from the Western Mediterranean

چکیده
Nineteen female silver European eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) were tagged with satellite tags and released in the Gulf of Lion Mediterranean during migration seasons 2013 2015. Sixteen transmitted data: five Atlantic Ocean, eleven Mediterranean. Of those, 50% migrating consumed by marine mammals each year, all The diving behaviour recorded after indicated that most likely predators deep toothed whales. Measurements acoustic target strength tag showed a negligible effect on detectability whale biosonar. Overall, observed predation rate was similar to reported for escaping into Atlantic. However, unlike Atlantic, which are vulnerable first week escapement as they traverse continental shelf before reach refuge ocean, from predated water, months release, consequence their within relatively narrow corridor Alboran Sea. This emphasises challenge accounting natural mortality management plans long-term recovery eel.

The potential reproductive contribution of Mediterranean migrating eels to the Anguilla anguilla stock
The European eel is a highly migratory fish. After the reproduction in the Sargasso Sea early larval-stages start a passive ocean migration towards European and Mediterranean continental waters. After several years as yellow eels, mature adults change to silver stage and then start their return trip. The trajectory of their backward migration is unknown, because of low probability of capturing ...
متن کاملFishing mortality on silver eels , Anguilla anguilla ( L . ) , in Denmark
A total of 2198 silver eels were Carlin-tagged and released at two sheltered and one exposed site in the western Baltic Sea. A total of 547 tagged silver eels were recaptured, corresponding to recoverv rates from 19 to 38% at the different sites. The majoritv of the recaptured silver cds was reporred from wirhin a radius of 20 km and within a period of less than 16 days after release. There was...
متن کاملShark Predation on Migrating Adult American Eels (Anguilla rostrata) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence
In an attempt to document the migratory pathways and the environmental conditions encountered by American eels during their oceanic migration to the Sargasso Sea, we tagged eight silver eels with miniature satellite pop-up tags during their migration from the St. Lawrence River in Québec, Canada. Surprisingly, of the seven tags that successfully transmitted archived data, six were ingested by w...
متن کاملDifferential gene expression analysis in European eels (Anguilla anguilla, L. 1758) naturally infected by macroparasites.
We analyzed the relationships between the macroparasite community of the European eel and the expression of genes involved in the host physiology during its continental life. The genes studied are implicated in (1) host response to environmental stress, i.e., heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and metallothionein (MT); (2) osmoregulation, i.e., beta thyroid hormone receptor (betaTHR) and Na+/K+ATPas...
متن کاملTowards a standardized characterization of the potentially migrating silver European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.)
We defined a standardized method for discriminating candidate silver eels that may undergo catadromous migration in the following season from the sedentary fraction of a population. A combination of two qualitative criteria (state of differentiation of the lateral line and colour contrast) and one quantitative criterion (Ocular Index OI) was used to determine the development toward silvering. I...
